This was the time when Indian subcontinent formed the part of Gondwanaland and south to it was the modern mainland of Africa. This view is supported by the fact that Lanka, the capital of Ravana the demon king is described as 'Swarna Nagari' or the land of Gold.

Now since Africa was a place where gold is found in abundance and also the physical features of the Lankans described in the Ramayana as being tall, dark and sturdy matches with those of the Africans.
