Kargil ended in a positive note for India, Pakistan being finally forced to vacate Indian territories, and the world community rebuking it in unanimity for the fiasco. Vajpayee’s shrewd foreign policy tactics further alienated Pakistan in the World Community. Pushed to the wall, diplomatically, by Vajpayee and crippled economic situation gave rise to the reactionary forces in Pakistan. A successful coup attempt saw the dislodging of the democratically elected government of Nawaz Sharif. It was replaced by a military dictatorship of Pervez Musharraf, which continues till date. Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) & allies who later formed the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) reaped the benefits of Kargil at the electoral hustings. Elections ’99 saw a popular upsurge in favour of Atal Behari Vajpayee, Kargil success helped in hiding the rather lackluster performance of his government. Vajpayee became a national hero. And was voted back to power with a comprehensive majority. For the first time in two decades a serving Prime Minister was re-elected. Except Jawaharlal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi nobody had repeated this feat in the post Independence India. From then onwards it has been a smooth sailing for Vajpayee, India entered the 20th Century under his visionary leadership. Inspite of being a coalition government, Vajpayee government has shown enough strength and courage, unmatched by even the previous governments of Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao. |
