Lal Krishna AdvaniIn 1992 BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) again gave a call for the construction of a Ram temple at Ayodhya and fixed the date of 6th December as the Shilanyas Diwas. A BJP government led by Kalyan Singh was at the helm in Uttar Pradesh and Narasimha Rao led Congress government was at the center. Fearing large-scale violence ala 1990, the Supreme Court asked both the Kalyan Singh government and Narasimha Rao government to clarify their stand. Both the governments assured the Supreme Court that necessary steps will be taken to ensure that law does not get out of hand on that day.

Thousands of Kar Sewaks had already started assembling there before the assurance had been given. On the fateful day almost all the senior leaders of BJP & VHP (except Atal Behari Vajpayee) had assembled there. Already there was a feeling of betrayal in the air among the Kar Sewaks. They were not happy with the dilly-dallying of the BJP on this sensitive issue. They had high expectations about the construction of Ram Temple ever since BJP government took charge in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Soon a normal process of Kar Sewa got out of control and thousands of Kar Sewaks, crossed the barriers and climbed the Babri Mosque and started hitting it with whatever they could gather in their hands. By 4 pm the Mosque was completely destroyed and the BJP leaders stood as mute spectators appealing in the mike for people to resist from destroying the mosque.

As the news spread large-scale violence erupted all across the country, Kalyan Singh resigned owing moral responsibility. All the top leaders of the BJP were arrested including Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi and except Atal Behari Vajpayee. Later on in an arbitrary decision all the other BJP governments in three states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Himanchal Pradesh were suspended.

Rao government at the center instituted Liberhans Commission to probe the incident, whose investigations remain inconclusive till today.
