YASHOVARMAN. A name or title belonging to several famous Kings of early times. One ruled Kannauj in the eighth century A.D., sent friendly emissaries to the Tang Dynasty in China, and was the patron of Sanskrit literati, including Bhavbhuti. Another was a ninthcentury ruler of Kambuja (present-day Kampuchea) whose numerous stone inscriptions were written in the Sanskrit language, using both the Devanagari script and the more commonly used script of Kambuja, and testified to the close ties between India and Southeast Asian kingdoms at the time. A third Yashovarman was a tenth-century Chandella King who battled against the Pratihara armies and built one of the distinctive Vishnu temples at Khajuraho.
