Lord Wellesley was the governor-general of India from 1798-1805. He had to his name the defeat of Tipu Sultan and subsequently his death in 1798. He strengthened the fledgling British Dominion in India by annexing various states.
He also paved the way for the further growth of British raj in India by creating a system of British patronage for Indian states, in which a residents were created in the capitals of various states where British soldiers were housed, these soldiers helped the states in defending against other Indian states.
Thus a watch was created to look at the internal matters of each state. Later on these residencies helped in capturing these very states when they yearned for sovereignty. But after his crushing defeat at the hands of Holkars he was removed.
