TUKARAM (1607-1649). Born to a sudra family of grocers and orphaned early, Tukaram became a devotee of the local deity, Vittobha. He experienced a mystical initiation in a dream (no brahman would Accept him as a disciple) and was a man of boundless generosity. He eventually renounced the life of a householder and became
a sannyasin. He worshipped Krishna and composed simple devotional hymns which became popular.
Tukaram was one of the saints quoted by Ramdas whose influence on Shivaji's development as a Maratha leader was considerable. Tukaram, however, chose not to visit Shivaji's court and remained a wandering ascetic.
