ROE, SIR THOMAS (1581-1644). Roe was the envoy of King James I of England to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. He lived in India for four years, from 1614-1618, and his Journal is a valuable historical source for the period. Roe was able to use the successful initiatives taken by William Hawkins earlier in gaining friends at the Mughal court and obtained from Jahangir permission for the East India Company to establish a trading post at the important west coast port of Surat.
