Chandragupta Maurya (?-298? B.C.), was the first great emperor of India. He founded the Maurya Empire and ruled from about 321 to 298 B.C. Chandragupta imposed heavy taxes on the people and provided severe punishment for crimes, including the crime of nonpayment of taxes. He used spies and informers to ensure obedience to his will. However, Chandragupta also provided great economic benefits for his people by improving irrigation canals and roads.
Chandragupta established the Maurya Empire by seizing control of the Punjab region after the death of Alexander the Great, and then conquering Magadha, a kingdom in the Ganges Valley. He eventually controlled much of North India, what is now Pakistan, and part of Afghanistan.
