Dupleix, Joseph François (1697?-1763), French leader in India during the Anglo-French conflicts of the 18th century. After serving the French East India Company in various subordinate posts, Dupleix was governor-general of all its possessions from 1742 to 1754.
During the War of the Austrian Succession, aided by the French naval commander Bertrand François de La Bourdonnais, he took Madras from the British, but lost it again by the terms of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748). After the war he tried to establish French hegemony over southern India by intervening in the quarrels that divided its native kingdoms, but was successfully opposed by the British under Robert Clive.
