BIRLA, GHANASHYAMDAS (1894-1983). G. D. Birla was born in a Marwari family which owned jute, cotton, and paper mills in Calcutta. He supported the Indian National Congress and played host to Mahatma Gandhi on many occasions and contributed financially to his cause. It was at Birla House, New Delhi, that Gandhi met his assassin on his way to the afternoon prayer meeting.
G.D. Birla was a philanthropist who built many temples, schools, and research institutions. More importantly, he built one of the largest and most prosperous industrial house, the Birla. He died in 1983.
