BIRBAL (1528-1586). Birbal was a Brahman wit and courtier who became friend and confidant of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. He was given the title of Kavi Priya, or poet laureate. His poetry became as famous as the many amusing stories about him at Akbar's court. Birbal joined the Din-i-illahi and occupied an elegant house in Fatehpur Sikri. He was killed in battle on the northwest frontier.
