BHARATENDU. HARISH CHANDRA (1850-1885). Harish Chandra of Varanasi was a prolific writer of prose and poetry. He made a pioneering contribution to modern Hindi literature, translated old works, also wrote in Sanskrit and Urdu, and was familiar with other north Indian languages.
Many of his writings portray the agonies and aspirations of middle class Indians in transition from tradition to modernity under British rule. He was influenced by the social reformer Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and himself promoted ideas of social reform through his speeches, writings, and the chain of literary journals that he started. His admirers designated Harish Chandra "Bharatendu" in 1880. He is known by that name in Hindi literature.
